Project Description
Geralta High Lodge
Geralta Valley, Ethiopia
The project is a proposal for a new sustainable lodge destination set on a plateau with incredible views across the mountains of the Geralta Valley.
30 lodge units are designed as rock clad vaults springing from the sloping topography. The vaults bear directly onto the ground rock with minimal foundations, avoiding expensive engineering in this earthquake prone area. The vaults are configured to create dramatic cave like interior spaces that enjoy panoramic views across the valley.
The project proposes a soil tiled vaulting, designed to use low
skilled local labour which will generate much needed employment in an area dominated by small scale subsistence agriculture.
The project is part of the proposed Geralta Valley Initiative, instigated by the National and Tigray local government, bringing tourism and small scale enterprise to this currently neglected region.
